  4.     Your article "The Redshirt Solution" (EDUCATION, Nov. 13),
  5. concerning the practice of delaying a child's entrance into
  6. kindergarten, contained quite a commentary on American education
  7. and on American life in general. Kathy Hewson stated, "By keeping
  8. our son back last year, we gave him a gift. We allowed him to be
  9. a child for one more year." How sad that once our youngsters go off
  10. to kindergarten, they are no longer allowed to be children.

  16.     The idea of redshirting children was distressing for those of
  17. us who still consider nursery school an option rather than a
  18. requirement. Aside from the questions it raises about the
  19. qualifications of those deciding who is ready for kindergarten and
  20. who is not, and what effects redshirting will have on the child who
  21. from then on will be the oldest in the class, the article poses
  22. another problem for the financially squeezed family: Who is to pay
  23. for all this preschool?
